Hit maker, named one of People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People and a huge Sooner fan are just a few of the characteristics that come to mind when folks talk about Bryan White.
Born in Lawton, Oklahoma this singer-songwriter found his way to Nashville through hard work and a love of one of the most important things in his life—music, along with being a dad and husband to his One Life to Live soap opera star, Erika Page.
Raised on and around music throughout his life, White believes it’s important to infuse music in a person’s life at an early age.
“Music has played such an important role in my life,” White said. “It teaches you such discipline. It’s very mathematical in its execution and really rewarding. Music allows you to be a part of your own creativity. I remember when I first started creating my own beats and experiencing that first taste of independence.”
Inspired by his musical mentor, Steve Wariner, who he was first introduced to through his musicians parents who constantly rehearsed and were learning one of Wariner’s songs.
“Oh my gosh! There’s something about his voice. There’s a timber and a tone in his voice,” said White. “His phrasing is really unique. He’s like a late 80’s version of Glenn Campbell. It was a defining moment for me. If he does a new guitar thing or a production trick I say to myself, ‘I want to be like Steve Wariner.’ He’s still a major influence on me.”
As for his personal process, White says music just comes to him. “Sometimes I start jotting down titles or thoughts. I’ll send a melody to a lyricist. I’m all over the map.” Encouraging newcomers to develop a thick skin and learn from every experience, White says he’s doling out a healthy dose of reality. “I’d say to newcomers how amazing it is to be in such a creative world like the music industry.” In regards to being a singer, songwriter or both, White says longevity is in songwriting. “Songwriting is blind. You can do that for the rest of your life. It’s about building your catalog, and it doesn’t matter what you look like.”
Recalling the first time he heard one of his songs on the radio, White said he was in Tucson, Arizona with a record label rep. “It was so bizarre. We were on the way to the radio station we were listening to and someone called in requesting my song,” said White. “Hearing your hard work coming through the speakers of your car is a surreal moment.”
Drawing inspiration from anything and everything for song and album titles, White says it jumps out at you.
“You start looking at your project and the subject matter of your record. It’s about where you are at that moment in time.” For instance, with his latest project with the working title of Shine!, he said he was inspired by another great day in the sun.
Excited for The Heart Behind the Music Songwriter’s Showcase on Friday, November 22nd at 7 p.m. at the historic Ritz Theatre in Talladega, White says a special energy is generated at a songwriter showcase.
“They’re great because everybody is generally an admirer of one another. It’s also a spectator sport for us too. These songs are ones we’ve loved since we were kids. So, it’s a concert for me too,” White said. “There’s a great energy creating that synergy.”
Looking forward to meeting old and new fans from St. Clair County, Talladega and beyond, White will explain the stories behind such chart toppers like Shania Twain’s From This Moment On. “Shania and Mutt Lange called me personally. I was on my bus asleep and thought it was a joke,” he said. “I was honored to do it. It was a big privilege, and we had a good blend.”
Music lovers and White fans can look forward to Bryan performing hits people know like Rebecca Lynn, From This Moment and perhaps sneak in a new song. “The audience is going to hear the stories behind all these songs, and a lot of people really love that. It’s more about the songs.”
Greg Barnhill, Richie McDonald and Kim Carnes will also join him center stage at The Heart Behind the Music Songwriter’s Showcase.
From the fella whose first concert was Loretta Lynn, Bryan looks forward to relaying to the audience the heart behind his music.
“It’ll be an intimate evening hearing about the craft of songwriting.”
